Costa Rica, You Have My Heart
Tamarindo
From the moment we landed in Tamarindo a quiet sadness washed over me. I had a feeling I would fall in love with the place – and then, all too soon, we would have to leave it.
I was right.
Tamarindo turned out to be the most magical place. From its golden sunsets, beautiful beaches, and laid- back energy that seemed to seep into everything, it captured my heart completely. The feeling while there was that time slowed down, life felt more simpler—and infinitely more beautiful.
A Walk on the Wild Side
We stayed at the Baja Langosta, a charming spot tucked just outside of town. It felt safe and welcoming, and the area was easily walkable. That said, we noted that if we had brought the kids along, renting a golf cart would have been the preferred way to get back and forth into town.
The walk, though, came with its own rewards. Every time we made our way into town on foot, we were treated to the sight of howler monkeys either walking along the power lines, eating in the trees or sleeping, we even saw a baby monkey up close. You hear the birds constantly in Tamarindo – each one a reminder that you’re immersed in something wild and alive.
Rain, Relaxation, and Hidden Treasures
We visited in June during the rainy season, so yes, it did rain frequently, but that felt special in its own way. The rain was warm and mostly gentle – early in the season, and light, according to locals. It never disrupted our trip; if anything it added to the experience (maybe just pack an umbrella). There was something so peaceful about sitting on our balcony, listening to the rhythmic waves crash while soft rain fell around us in the afternoons.
One of our favorite parts of the day was walking down from the condo with our Airbnb-supplied beach chairs and towels to the semi-private beach. There was always a quiet spot waiting for us, and the views were breathtaking! The seashells were some of the most unique I’ve ever seen – we spent hours combing through the sand, finding the most special ones to bring home for our girls.
Savoring Every Moment
And then – the food.
The food was a highlight of the trip. We fell in love with the local spots and found a few favorites we returned to frequently.
- The Snack Shack, just a short walk became our go to for acai bowls and smoothies – so fresh, light and full of flavor!
- El Sapo, conveniently located right across the street from our condo, served what we both agreed was the best pizza we’ve ever had. Don’t skip their signature spicy dipping sauce—its addictive!
- Fish and Cheese, also a short walk away in Langosta, had homemade pasta! The homemade ravioli I had melted in my mouth and I am truthfully not a big pasta lover so they won me over!
- Refugio was my husband’s top pick for burgers – he is still saying that was the best burger he has ever had. And the coffee, so good I brought a bag home, though I wish I would have gotten a few bags!
- At the Bistro Langosta, we had a gorgonzola cheese sauce that inspired us to come home and recreate it in our own kitchen.
Pura Vida People
Even in the evenings, the streets felt safe to walk. There was a sense of freedom and calm in the air – a positive, unhurried energy that’s hard to find elsewhere. Every local we interacted with, from the friendly waitstaff to the team at Iguana Surf Lesson’s, was warm and welcoming.
We also treated ourselves to a relaxing in-home couples massage with Massages by Elizabeth right at our Airbnb – an experience I’d highly recommend to anyone visiting. It was affordable and easily set up through Whats app.
Reflections from a Heart Full of Pura Vida
Tamarindo has a way of slowing you down, grounding you, and reminding you of life’s simple joys. It left a mark on my soul. Leaving was harder than expected, but I’m so grateful we had the chance to experience it. Some places change you—and Tamarindo is one of them.
Until next time, Costa Rica.
